Pretty darn good BBQ, just a little ways out of town.
Although Toano is a fair ways up the road, Hog Wild is worth the short drive.
The beef brisket is quite good, better than the brisket at most places. (Brisket is a challenge for most places.)
The ribs are dry-rub and come with a variety of BBQ sauces, which is a big strong point.
Many BBQ joints provide a multitude of sauces. But these tend to merely be varieties of tomato-based sauces. And that's really very limiting.
Hog Wild gives a better choice. Five sauces are presented. One is a standard tomato-based BBQ sauce. It's rich and smokey. Then there's a Tabasco-based sauce. Yes, it's spicy. But it also has a strong Tabasco flavor without tasting solely like Tabasco. There are two vinegar-based sauces. One is sweetened and is very tasty. The other is more pungent. It wouldn't be nearly good enough for a real Carolinan. But it's plenty tangy for folks not raised on vinegar sauces. And the final sauce is a mustard-based one. Lip smackin' good.
(There is a sixth sauce. It's ketchup. Frankly, you may as well just pour sugar on your food.)
The onion rings are obviously handmade, with thick rings of onion. The coating is a little strange. Good, but different than most onion rings: dry, light, and crispy.
Hog Wild also offers a selection of Cajun dishes.

As you head north-east out of Toano, Richmond Road/Route 60 takes a 90 degree turn to the left at an intersection. The Hog Wild Smokehouse is exactly 1.4 miles after this intersection, just past the Stonehouse Church, on the right.
